Hello, fellow earth-lovers! Whether you’re just dipping your toes into the sustainable living pool or you’ve been composting before it was cool, this one’s for you.
As a long-time zero-waste advocate, I’m here to let you in on a little secret: living sustainably doesn’t require going off-grid, making your own toothpaste, or weaving your clothes out of hemp (but good on you if you do).
The truth? Small daily actions can have a big impact over time — especially when you’re consistent. And how do we stay consistent? By tracking our habits! More on that in a sec. But first, let’s look at 15 simple, sustainable habits you can start today:
♻️ 15 Sustainable Daily Habits:
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Ditch the plastic and hydrate in style.
- Use a tote bag (or three). Keep one in your car, one in your bag, and one in your coat pocket.
- Say no to single-Use. Use reusable containers for your lunch and ditch the plastic water bottles.
- Walk or Cycle (short trips). Better for you and better for the Planet.
- Buy local and seasonal produce. Farmers’ markets and local farm shops = fresh + fewer emissions.
- Turn off lights when you leave the room. Your energy bill will love you.
- Unplug devices when not in use. Vampire energy is real.
- Line-dry your clothes. Bonus: everything smells like sunshine, who doesn’t love freshly washed sheets dried outdoors.
- Choose secondhand first. Think of pre-loved / charity shops as treasure hunting, you never know what you’ll find.
- Refill all the way. From cupboard staples to shampoo and cleaning products, local refill shops stock it all!
- Pick up litter during your walks. stops it ending up in our waterways and reduces pollution.
- Recycle (properly!). Know what your Council will and wont take—wishcycling isn’t helping.
- Use cloth instead of paper towels. Old T-shirts have a second life!
- Start a compost jar or bin. Even if it’s just veggie scraps in a sealed bucket.
- Take shorter showers. Or at least turn the water off while shampooing!
But Wait — Why Track Your Habits?
Here’s where things get interesting. You’ve got the habits. You’ve got the good intentions. But without tracking, it’s easy to forget what you actually did versus what you meant to do.
Tracking helps turn good intentions into real-life change. It keeps you accountable, shows your progress, and honestly? It’s kind of fun. There’s nothing more satisfying than checking off a habit and seeing your streak grow.
A simple tool like a Sustainable Living Habit Tracker lets you log what you’re doing and reflect weekly. You might discover, “Wow, I remembered my tote bag 6 days this week!” or “Oops, forgot to compost all weekend—time to put the jar on the counter.”
Sustainable living isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness, effort, and slowly building better habits. Tracking helps you stay mindful without the guilt.
🌱 Progress, Not Perfection
Look, I still mess up sometimes. I’ve grabbed a plastic fork when eating lunch on the go or forgotten my coffee cup (more than once!). But every little choice adds up. If a million people do sustainability imperfectly, it’s still a million steps in the right direction.
“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”
― Anne Marie Bonneau,
So pick a few habits. Start small. Celebrate your wins. Track your progress. And most importantly—keep going. You’re doing better than you think.
