homemade christmas gifts

Can you believe Christmas is just six weeks away? It always sneaks up, doesn’t it! But don’t panic — there’s still plenty of time to make thoughtful, sustainable gifts that won’t break the bank or fill the bin.

I’ve pulled together a few of my favourite homemade gift ideas that are simple, planet-friendly, and guaranteed to make your loved ones smile. Think cosy scents, natural ingredients, and that satisfying “I made this myself!” feeling.

If you start now and make one each week, you’ll have a whole stash of beautiful, handmade presents ready to go by Christmas Eve. 🌿

Beeswax Wraps – The Eco Kitchen Essential

These Beeswax wraps are one of my all-time favourite sustainable swaps — and they make such a gorgeous gift.

You just need:

  • 100% cotton fabric scraps
  • Beeswax pellets
  • A touch of jojoba oil
  • Pine resin (optional, but helps make them tacky)

Cut your fabric into squares, melt your wax and oils together, brush over the fabric, and bake for a few minutes until the wax soaks in. Let them cool, then fold and tie into a bundle with twine.

They’re reusable and are perfect for wrapping up leftovers or sandwiches.

Gift tip: Pair a set of wraps with a reusable lunch box or some homemade snacks!

Sugar Scrubs – Sweet Self-Care in a Jar

Everyone deserves a little pampering during the festive rush!

To make a simple sugar scrub:

1 cup sugar (white or brown)

½ cup coconut oil (or sweet almond oil)

10–12 drops of essential oils

Mix together until you have a soft, grainy texture. You can play around with scents — my favourite Christmas blend is:
Sweet Orange + Cinnamon + Clove for that warm, festive glow.

Spoon into clean jars, add a ribbon or tag, and you’ve got a spa-worthy gift made in minutes.

Shower Steamers – Spa Vibes for Busy People

Not everyone has time for a long bath, so these little wonders are perfect for quick relaxation.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ½ cup citric acid
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (optional)
  • 1–2 tbsp water
  • 20 to 30 drops of essential oil (eucalyptus, peppermint, or orange work beautifully)

Mix dry ingredients, spritz in a little water until it just clumps together, then press into silicone moulds. Let them dry overnight.

To use, place one on the shower floor (away from the direct stream) and breathe in the steam — instant calm!

Gift tip: Wrap a few in paper and pop them in a jar or cotton bag — they look adorable!

Note: Pop a cute label on them to say what they are and how to use them and remember due to the high concentration of essential oils they shouldn’t be used as bath bombs but placed on the floor of the shower.

Potpourri – Smells Like Christmas in a Jar

This one couldn’t be simpler and fills your home with the scent of the season.

You’ll need:

  • Dried orange slices
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cloves
  • Star anise
  • A few drops of essential oils (try orange and clove)

Mix everything together and store in jars or little cotton bags. It’s a wonderful zero-waste gift that’s as pretty as it is fragrant.

Gift tip: Add a note suggesting they simmer it in a pan of water for instant natural air freshening!

Hot Chocolate Jars – A Hug in a Mug

Who doesn’t love hot chocolate at Christmas? These look fantastic lined up on a counter and make brilliant teacher or neighbour gifts.

Layer cocoa powder, sugar, chocolate chips, and marshmallows into a jar. Add a tag that says “Just add hot milk!” and tie with ribbon or twine.

You can even get creative and add crushed candy cane, cinnamon, or a few festive sprinkles.
