is your laundry detergent bad for you

Why Your Laundry Detergent Might Be the Dirtiest Thing in Your Home (and What to Use Instead!)

Right then, let’s talk about something lurking in your cupboards that might seem innocent but could be causing more harm than you realise: your laundry detergent.

Now, I know – we’ve all got our trusty brand we’ve used for years. Maybe it’s the one your mum used or the one that promises “spring-fresh” laundry that smells like a fresh mown meadow.

But  did you know? – many conventional laundry detergents are absolutely loaded with chemicals that are the not only harsh on your clothes but also on your skin, health, waterways, and, yes –the planet.

So What’s the Problem With Mainstream Laundry Detergents?

Let’s break it down:

Harsh Chemicals in your Laundry Detergent

Your average laundry detergent can contain a cocktail of synthetic ingredients: optical brighteners (to make your whites look whiter), phosphates (which help break down grime), and a whole symphony of artificial fragrances. They may get the job done but most of these are skin irritants and can aggravate conditions like eczema and asthma.

Water pollution

When you rinse those suds down the drain, they don’t just vanish into thin air. The phosphates contribute to algae blooms in rivers and lakes, choking aquatic life and messing with ecosystems. Not very “clean,” is it?

Fragrance overload

Ever had your laundry smell so strong it gave you a headache? Synthetic fragrances are often made from petroleum-based ingredients and can contain phthalates – which are hormone disruptors. And no, they’re not listed on the label because fragrance recipes are considered “trade secrets.” Which really doesn’t seem right?

Residue left on clothes

That lovely-smelling laundry detergent can leave a chemical residue on your clothes, which then rubs against your skin all day. Not ideal if you’re trying to live a low-tox life.  Don’t get me started on fabric conditioner, we’ll leave that one for another day!

So what are the alternatives?

The good news? You can absolutely keep your clothes clean, fresh and fabulous without the chemical soup. Here are some planet- and people-friendly swaps that actually work:

Eco Laundry Sheets

Eco Laundry Sheets are fairly new so you may not have seen them in supermarkets yet – ultra-light, plastic-free laundry detergent in sheet form. They’re biodegradable, often made with plant-based ingredients, and they come in cardboard packaging. Great for travel too (perfect for campers).

Makeyour own - DIY Laundry Detergent

With this DIY recipe you’ll know exactly what’s going into your laundry deterget.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Empty jar or container
  • 2 cups Washing Soda
  • 1 cup Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 1/2 cup of Soap Flakes (or grated bar of Castile Soap)

HOW TO:

  1. Mix together in a large bowl and pour into your container.  It’s that simple !
  2. This recipe works best on a 40 degree heat and use one scoop for a normal load, you can use double if you have some tougher stains to shift.
  3. And, with any homemade laundry recipe that uses Soap Flakes or grated Castile Soap it’s best to run a load on a really hot wash once a month to ensure there’s no build up of soap.

Soap Nuts (or Soap Berries)

These little wonders grow on trees (literally) and naturally contain saponin, which acts like soap. Pop a few in a small cotton bag and pop them in your wash. They’re compostable, zero-waste, and ideal for sensitive skin.

Castile Soap

A bit of a natural all-rounder, castile soap (often made from olive or coconut oil) can be diluted and used as a gentle laundry detergent. Add a few drops of lavender or lemon essential oil and you’ve got yourself a spa day in your washing machine.  Don’t use too much and add half a cup of white vinegar to your rinse.

Eco Brands to look out for

Here in the UK, we’ve got some brilliant natural cleaning brands. Look out for Bio-D, Fill, Minimal, Greenscents and  Allavare which you can buy online or at your local refill shop.

Final Spin Cycle…

Making the switch to a greener laundry routine isn’t about turning all hippy, eco warrior. It’s about making thoughtful choices that are better for your health, your home, and the planet. And the best part? You don’t have to sacrifice clean clothes or lovely scents. In fact, once you ditch the harsh stuff, you’ll start to notice how fresh actually smells.

So next time you do a load of washing, think of it as an act of sustainability. A little shift in your laundry room can ripple out into a big impact. And you’ll know you’re doing your bit for a cleaner, greener Planet
